Resolved, That the United States House of Representatives--
(1) affirms the rich spiritual and diverse religious history of our Nation’s founding and subsequent history, including up to the current day;
(2) recognizes that the religious foundations of faith on which America was built are critical underpinnings of our Nation’s most valuable institutions and form the inseparable foundation for America’s representative processes, legal systems, and societal structures;
(3) rejects, in the strongest possible terms, any effort to remove, obscure, or purposely omit such history from our Nation’s public buildings and educational resources; and
(4) expresses support for designation of a ‘America’s Spiritual Heritage Week’ every year for the appreciation of and education on America’s history of religious faith. |

America's Spiritual Heritage Some members of Congress have crafted a resolution encouraging Americans to remember the Christian perspective of the Founders. Stuart Shepard and Tom Minnery discuss H.Res. 397 in the Focus Action Update. We encourage you to read the full text of the bill. |

 | ACLJ - HR397 111th Congress
President Obama: Don’t Deny America’s
Christian HeritageThere’s a powerful push underway to rewrite this nation’s history ... to strip America of its religious past — to deny our country’s Judeo-Christian heritage. Even President Obama recently said, “We do not consider ourselves a Christian nation....”
Now, concerned Members of the Congressional Prayer Caucus have stepped forward and introduced the “America’s Spiritual Heritage Resolution” (H.R. 397). It’s dedicated to recognizing “the rich spiritual and religious history of our nation’s founding.”
The American Center for Law and Justice is strongly backing this Congressional resolution, and we need your generous support to help protect our nation’s rich religious history and continue all of our legal and legislative work across the country. Give generously and help the ACLJ send a powerful message to Washington: Don’t rewrite our nation’s history! |

Rep Forbes (R) - Virginia Comment
Rep. Forbes Featured in U.S. News & World Report

An editorial by Congressman Forbes was featured in the U.S. News & World Report on May 7, 2009. An excerpt from the editorial follows:
On April 6, 2009, President Obama, speaking halfway across the world in Turkey, effectively made a shocking proclamation: that the United States did not consider itself a Judeo-Christian nation.
"Although, as I mentioned, we have a very large Christian population, we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation or a Jewish nation," he said. I do not challenge his right to make that statement, nor do I doubt that he believes it to be true. But there were two critical questions that he failed to ask and answer. First, did America ever consider itself a Judeo-Christian nation? Secondly, if it did, what was the moment or event in which it ceased to do so?
Our nation's history provides overwhelming evidence that America was birthed upon Judeo-Christian principles. The first act of America's first Congress in 1774 was to ask a minister to open with prayer and to lead Congress in the reading of four chapters of the Bible. In 1776, in approving the Declaration of Independence, our founders acknowledged that all men "are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights..." and noted that they were relying "on the protection of Divine Providence" in the founding of this country. John Quincy Adams said, "The Declaration of Independence laid the cornerstone of human government upon the first precepts of Christianity." Also, the signers of the 1783 Treaty of Paris, which ended the Revolutionary War, insisted the treaty begin with the phrase, "In the name of the most holy and undivided Trinity." |

Hostess Committee
February 2010
January has been a quiet month for the Hostess Committee. Our Church had a wonderful December, filled with celebrations observing the birth of Jesus. We now turn our attention to the upcoming year. It is time to turn our efforts and resolve to reach out to our community witnessing to those who do not know Christ and are not enjoying love and Christian fellowship. We are so fortunate in that Brian Norris is our Fifth Sunday Sing guest, bringing the word to us through his music in our morning service. Following the service, we will be enjoying a pot-luck luncheon in the Fellowship Hall. In Matthew, Jesus promises us: “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them”. This will be a great time to enjoy wonderful food, Christian love and conversation with family, friends and neighbors in the presence of Christ. Many of us share fond memories of Fifth Sunday sings over the years. One of my fondest memories, is waking up at my Grandmother’s house on a Sunday morning, the house filled with the wonderful smell of her cooking, the sounds of good old gospel music playing on the radio brought by the local station in Cordele, Georgia, with great anticipation of seeing aunts, uncles and cousins at Pleasant View Baptist Church’s Sunday Gospel Sing after the “Dinner on the Ground”, prepared with love and good Christian hands. Remember when the old churches had no air-conditioning, the windows were open and you could hear “Nothing But the Blood of Jesus” floating across the churchyard and road, never mind the fact that a big old wasp had flown in an open window and was “dive bombing” little Billy McGlamery, who was wedged (for control) between Ms. McGlamery and Beulah Jones.
When we have our church gatherings and events in our Homecomings, Fifth Sunday Sings, Vacation Bible Schools and others, we are making memories for ourselves, our friends, children and grandchildren that will live on in our hearts for years to come. We are setting examples for them and letting them see what a fulfilled and wonderful a Christian life can be. Kristin is making memories and setting a wonderful example when she lifts Kyla up on a chair, hands her a microphone so that she can join her in singing God’s praises. We should all make it our resolution this year to seize every opportunity to participate in all of our church’s social functions this upcoming year and invite a friend, relative or neighbor. We should resolve to be known as a friendly church, spreading the story of redemption.

New Small Groups
/ Bible Study
Sunday School
Time 9:15 to 10:15am
January 2010
We have an exciting study going on right now for our high schoolers. An incredible journey through God's truths presented in a series of video presentations and discussions. Come and enjoy.
The High School class has been going through a couple of Bible studies by Andy Stanley. We have completed the first series, Pause, which took a close look at the temptations Jesus faced in the desert so that we could identify the driving forces behind the temptations that we face every day. Once we realize what is behind temptation, and what is at stake every time we are tempted, we can find the confidence to respond as Jesus did. We are now going through another Andy Stanley series entitled, Destinations. We all have places we want to end up in life. Yet the paths we choose often lead us away from our intended destinations. One poor decision can send us down the wrong road, crushing our dreams, and wasting years of our lives. This study examines the disconnect between our dreams and the paths we take to reach them. We look at how our direction, and not our intentions, determines our destinations. The High Schoolers have enjoyed this series and the thought provoking, probing questions that it causes us to face. The things we have learned are applicable to adults as well as youth.
